Announced completely by surprise at the Xbox E3 2021 conference, the free A Pirate’s Life content for Sea of Thieves was shown in a full presentation to reporters. This is what we can tell you after long minutes of discovery.
Indeed, during 1h30 we were able to discover in detail the content A Pirate’s Life and ask our own questions to the developers. What to fill up with information before a release of additional content, program for the June 22.
Obviously you will not have missed this, Microsoft and Rare have partnered with Disney to include license content. Carabean Pirate in Sea of Thieves. A marketing stroke of genius, the brilliant SoT student can finally meet his master. It is therefore with a certain motion that Mike Chapman, Creative Director of the game, spoke to us about this major project. The contents A Pirate’s Life is first conceived as a tribute to the Pirate des Carabes attraction which opened its doors in 1967 and also, in 1992, at Disneyland Paris. Very clearly the nostalgia for the evocation of this attraction was present among all the developers who spoke about the project during this private presentation.
A stroke of genius
History of going to the end of things, entire scenes of the attraction were recreated movement by movement in Sea of thieves, with the same characters and the same voices that were used for the occasion. Obviously we cannot redo the attraction in-game but all the scenes will be visible at one time or another in the added content. From the skeleton captain’s warning to the drunkards in the tavern spilling a barrel of rum.
Between ode and homage
Besides the attraction, the content obviously chooses the eponymous film saga with the irreplaceable Johnny Depp and his iconic character of Jack Sparrow. The basic premise is simple: what would happen if in a magical way, Jack Sparrow and part of his crew found themselves in the world of Sea of Thieves? Quite simply, we shouldn’t look any further. The link is made by the World of the Dead from the film (Davy Jones’ lair) and the Sea of the Damned from Sea of thieves which plays somewhat the same role in the game and of which we can glimpse part of our death on the famous ghost ship. Jack Sparrow by a magical passage in the Den of Davy Jones is thus found propelled in the fictitious world of Sea of thieves (which is not the real Caribbean Sea, let us remember). During his passage in this other world / dimension, he will be followed by Davy Jones and his crabeater crew who will represent a new threat for the players. Simple but brilliant, the link between the two universes is easy to find, and we believe in it.
Of great intelligence
Mike Chapman promises a ton of content and quite clearly you can expect to have a story that’s almost as big in life as the original game’s fables.
The content is in particular the opportunity to introduce several new enemies including sirens and therefore underwater combat, crab men (fish, electricity and classics) and obviously Davy Jones in person as well as many other surprises such as Davy Jones’ Kraken seen in the second film. Obviously during our adventure we will meet Jack since he is the central character of the content but also part of his crew like Gibbs, Cotton and obviously also Pintel and Ragetti. To face the new threats we will have the possibility to use the Trident of Dark Tides, sort of very effective magic stick.
A Pirate’s Life will also allow you to discover many new places which are all inspired by the Pirate des Carabes attraction and the films. Thus, we can admire the wreck of the Black Pearl and other places that are still secret. The world of Sea of thieves will also receive ester eggs all over the world related to the license outside of the fables. And of course, a bunch of cosmetic novelties for players and for boats will be available for purchase. Finally, The Prison Dog, the famous dog who holds keys between his teeth will be among the new pets.
WE ARE WAITING FOR IT .. WITH GREAT IMPATIENCE!
In addition to the marketing genius, this content is a real breath of fresh air for Sea of Thieves which brings real new content to a title that was starting to go round in circles. Everything that we could glimpse of this DLC is thought out intelligently and makes you want to know more. In short, a masterstroke on the part of Rare which should greatly appeal to fans of films and attraction.
