A release in this year of grace 2021 seemed impossible, and would have surprised us, to be honest. Hulst ended up clearing it up by stating this on the PlayStation Blog :
Regarding God of War, the project started a little late. So we made the decision to postpone the game until next year. to make sure Santa Monica can release an amazing God War game.
The former boss of Guerrilla continues by indicating that the title, like Horizon Forbidden West or Gran Turismo 7, will also be released on PlayStation 4. It now needs more time.
This confirmed by Santa Monica Studio, who has since spoken on Twitter:

Since the teaser for the upcoming God of War last year, we’ve been overwhelmed by the love our community has shown us. We are extremely grateful to see so many excited about discovering the next chapter in Kratos and Atreus’ journey.
We remain focused on delivering a high-quality experience while ensuring the safety and well-being of our team, creative partners and families. This is why we have decided to postpone the release until 2022.
We will therefore have to wait until 2022 to see Kratos and Atreus return to our beautiful regions. But you can still (re) discover God of War on PS4. It is well worth it.
